Chapter 1
Our story begins with a young boy named Pug collecting some kind of small sea creature at the shore. We get a quick impression that Pug lives a bit undisciplined. He falls asleep on the rocks and eventually loses the sack of creatures. He was on a task for someone at the Castle at Crydee but he seems to take the leisurely route and take his time. He remarks about the different ways in which he can can get in trouble when getting back and with whom. Making it clear this is something he is familiar with.
He wakes up from his nap on the rocks later than he wanted. In his rush to get back he twists his ankle. Leaving him a little gimp and late getting back to the castle. He sets off through the forest and ends up in a bad storm in the night. After a wild boar almost kills him in the woods he is saved by a sturdy stoic woodsman type individual who takes him back to a cabin to wait out the storm.
In the cabin he meets the wizard who he is familiar from a distance with from the castle. The Court Magician Kulgan. The magician tells Pug a brief history of the land. Most likely for the readers benefit. The content is something most likely that everyone would know the basics of in the book world. The Great Empire of Kesh ruled all the land but they had to fight a rebellion to their south and it made them weak. Allowing a New Kingdom called "Kingdom" to swoop in from the Kingdom of Isles and take all the of the North. The capitol being on the Islands the East in a city called Rillanon.
We also learn from a test that the magician gives Pug by having him using what appears a scrying glass to magically look upon the castle kitchens. Confirming that Pug can potentially be a Magician. Kulgan seems to be surprised by Pug's ability and power using the glass on the first try.
Also Kulgan has a pet or friendly Drake the size of a dog. Basically a hyper intelligent Dragon buy stays the size of a medium dog.
